Here is the first of the three zines I made for teaching wildfire science. I had this zine printed and folded for the students so we could walk around the reserve and discuss the following concepts with examples on the landscape itself. Active learning.

Introduction to fire science zine

The fire triangle defines the needs of a fire to grow or if you are managing it, to maintain or shrink it.

fire chemistry

An illustrated outline of the chemistry of fire.

combustion temps

The physics of combustion.

fire energy release

How energy is released from a wildfire.

fuel ladders

How spacing of fuels influence fire spread.

california fire

The recent fire history of California.

controlled burns

The relatively small amount of controlled burning in California compared to natural fires. We need to do much, much more!

pyrodiversity sketch

How the complex fire history of an area creates pyrodiversity.
